Troubleshooting: Video Signal
In this article, we'll walk through various solutions in the event video signal is not appearing on a desired output device.
Possible Issues
- Cables are not connected to the correct ports
- The wrong converter is being used
- Cable or converter failure
- Internal routing is incorrect
Before moving on, it is always good practice to try these things to see if they resolve the issue:
- Inspect all cables to ensure they are securely and correctly connected.
- Verify the converters in use are receiving power.
If those steps do not resolve the issue, continue reading as we walk through how to identify and resolve the issues listed above.
Cables are not connected to the correct ports.
The most common cause for video not showing on an output is due to incorrect setup. To effectively troubleshoot this issue, start at the source of the signal. Proceed through the signal flow ensuring cables are securely connected and in the intended ports. Pay close attention to input and output labels.
The wrong converter is being used
Most converters are designed to pass signal in only one direction. Many output devices (TV, Projector) receive signal via HDMI. At the output device, you will find a converter designed to receive SDI signal IN and pass it OUT through HDMI.
Inspect the converter being used Ito verify it is processing signal in the proper direction. The unit will specify which connection is the "IN" and which is the "Out". (see example picture)
Cable or converter failure
It's not uncommon for a cable, converter, or power supply to fail. HDMI cables in particular are prone to damage easily. Try unplugging any adapters or HDMI cables connected to the computer and plugging them back in. It may also be necessary to swap out any converters and cables connected to the computer, as that may also be the cause of the issue.
Internal routing is incorrect.
