Understanding: Sound Engineer Onboarding Process
The following is the current process for vetting and onboarding new campus Sound Engineers.
Step 1 - Campus Interview
Step 2 - Campus sends candidate prospective questionnaire form
Step 3 - Campus submits a ticket to begin process
Step 4 - Candidate interview with member of central audio team
Step 5 - Candidate shadows on a weekend
Step 6 - Candidate virtual sound check
Step 7 - Second shadow on a weekend (if necessary)
Step 8 - Candidate reverse shadow
Step 9 - Full Approval
At any point in this process, the central audio team can make the determination that the candidate is not at the required skill level to complete the onboarding process. The goal is to properly vet the candidate in steps 1 and 2, however it's always possible we'll learn something later in the process that warrants ceasing the onboarding process.
Step 1 - Campus Interview
The first step of the process involves the campus staff, specifically the Production Director and Worship Leader, meeting with the candidate. Your goal is to vet them as a team and culture fit. It's important that you have confidence in their technical ability but the next step of this process will provide more insight on that front.
Step 2 - Campus sends candidate prospective questionnaire form
Campus staff sends the candidate the following form for our central audio team to learn more about their technical and mixing experience.

Step 3 - Campus submits ticket to begin process
Campus staff submits a ticket with the name, phone number, and email of the candidate along with a debrief of step 1's meeting. Tell us why you're excited about them.
Step 4 - Candidate interview with member of central audio team
One of our central audio team members will reach out to the candidate to conduct a more formal interview to ascertain specifics of their mixing experience.
Step 5 - Candidate shadows on a weekend (can occur before or after step 6)
The candidate will be invited to come to Charlotte to shadow one of our SE trainers on a Sunday. Our central team will book a hotel for anyone and process a mileage reimbursement from out of town. These expenses will be coded to the campus Production budget.
Step 6 - Candidate virtual sound check (can occur before or after step 5)
The candidate will meet with a trainer at Matthews, Lake Norman, or Blakeney using Virtual Sound Check to train and practice a weekend process. This step will be repeated 2-3 times until the candidate is ready to operate the console on a weekend.
Step 7 - Second shadow on a weekend (if necessary)
If the candidate is not ready to fully operate the console on a weekend, a second shadow may occur where they're given a chance to operate one portion of the day (ear mixes, run-through, etc.) This step is less likely to occur with out of town candidates in order to minimize weekend travel.
Step 8 - Candidate reverse shadow
The candidate will operate the console on a Sunday from beginning to end with a trainer there to observe and assist when needed. The goal is the candidate can run the full weekend with confidence, asking only minimal questions.
Step 9 - Full Approval
The candidate is officially approved and able to be scheduled at a campus without oversight.
